1. Player Information

Current characters in ToS: Ben Braeden (au)

2. Canon Character Information
Name: Marcus Whitmore
PB: Alex Pettyfer
Journal:
Age: Marcus looks to be 28. He has walked the earth, however, for 261 years.
Appearance: He looks like he is in his late twenties, with the blonde hair and blue eyes of a California surfer. He is of average height and a build that makes him look slight, but his body was wiry and energetic. He carries the attractive airs of a vampire that in his world make him look more beautiful than humanly possible, and his eyes tend to twinkle with a mischievous look that could be laughter, mystery, or promises of something a bit more personal and carnal depending on the intent. He is very relaxed and easygoing which shows in his posture, but when he gets frustrated he will take on more proper tones that have been beaten in his head by his vampire family. His hair tends to be a bit wild like a surfer, and when he’s frustrated, he will rake his fingers through the gold tresses.
The biggest thing to note is that his kind of vampires do not have fangs. His skin is a porcelain color, but not because of lack of sunlight exposure as he is able to walk in the sun just fine. His skin is cool to the touch, though.
History: The wiki page for Marcus is horrible, so I took down notes from the three books and posted them here if the mods are unfamiliar with the canon. However, for the application I will write it out more linear:
Marcus Whitmore was born on a Massachusetts farm to a religious farmer of a father and an understanding mother. He left home to fight in the revolution, and became a surgeon assistant for the rebels. It was in the service that he met Matthew Clairmont entered his life when he helped care for Matthew’s friend, the Marquis de Lafayette., in 1777. Four years later in 1781, stricken with fever and certain that he was about to die, Matthew told Marcus the story of what he truly was and offered to bring the young healer into his family. The fear of pain and death outweighed the fear of the life of a vampire, and he let Matthew change him forever. It was hard for Marcus to adjust to the new life, but Matthew took care of him in the first months until he was able to get control of his hunger and live among people again.
As one of his first stints on his own after that, Marcus went to New Orleans and started to create his own little vampire family in the city during the time of the Louisiana Purchase (1803). He was raising hell and upsetting the balance between the witches and vampires in the city, and Matthew returned with his “friend’ Juliette Durand. It wasn't until 2014 that Marcus learned why his children started to disappear after their arrival - he was a carrier for a long dead disease called blood rage that he had unknowingly passed on to his children and grandchildren. Matthew was under orders from Philippe - Marcus' grandfather - to eviscerate the signs of the disease from New Orleans - including killing Marcus - but Matthew could not kill his son. Marcus begged for salvation with the Congregation and finally let himself come back under Matthew’s heel and promise not to cause any more problems in the city. Unknown to him, Matthew had taken responsibility for the actions of his son and promised that Marcus would make no more children until he was older and wiser.
He had lived many other lives since then, including times in Philadelphia and California, trying his hand in real estate and investing in technologies that wouldn’t bear any fruit. Matthew had promised to send Marcus to university when they made their pact, and eventually Marcus found himself learning higher practices of medicine and genetics. It would lead him along on his current life as a lab assistant to his father in Oxford where they studied the genetic traits of the three races of creatures in an effort to uncover the cause of the dying out of the races in hopes to understand and save them all.
When Matthew went to travel into the past to help his wife Diana, Marcus took on the role of Grand Master of the Knights of Lazarus. In that time he is able to recruit a new generation of knights and will take the Congregation head on to try and get them to change their ways and repel the covenant that keeps creatures separate from each other. He does a good job at it, earning the respect of the other knights over time and accomplishing his goals once Matthew and Diana return to the present.
He is also responsible for helping his father form an official scion away from the de Clermonts to form an official Bishop-Clarimont family line. His children that remain in New Orleans fall into this order, and while they have not forgiven Matthew for his actions, have started to come to be more involved in their family.
He is also engaged to a British "blue blood" named Phoebe Taylor, who is an art historian and very strong willed, modern, and tends to act as referee in family arguments. He's mated to her at this point, and she has decided that she wants to become a vampire and that she will learn to get used to that life first before their are officially married.
Powers/Talents: Marcus is a vampire. This gives him speed, heightened sight, hearing and smell, and regenerative capabilities. He can’t die from old age, and is never going to age physically beyond the body of someone in their late 20’s. While it’s not a power, his type of vampires do not have any bad reactions to the sun and can walk in it just fine. And if a witch from his world showed up, they would feel cool spots on their body where he would stare at them.
His blood has it’s own properties He can drain a person completely of their blood and feed him his own to be able to change someone into a vampire. Marcus is very adept at doing this - he had his own little family in New Orleans back in the 1800’s. Applied topically, his blood can heal wounds better than a surgeon would be able to. It’s also been shown that giving a drop of vampire blood to a human will also knock them out. Some witches believe that vampires do it to control them.
He was a field surgeon in the American Revolution, and is currently a doctor of genetics in Oxford University. He knows more than basic first aid and has helped save many lives with his medical treatments. He has been working in a laboratory studying genetic traits so he would know how to use all the modern day equipment in a fully functional scientific lab. He is known in the science world for his study on functional morphology and efforts to debunk phenotypic plasticity. He also recently delivered his twin siblings and has full working knowledge of the human anatomy.
Marcus is a carrier for a disease known as blood rage. Now that he has this knowledge, he won't be making any new vampires anytime soon.
He is a sharpshooter with a rifle. He also knows now how to manage an entire army of knights, creating strategies in the modern age with computers to be able to coordinate efforts of land troops, financials, and other matters pertaining to keeping a secret society operational.
Personality: If Marcus was a cat, he would have died a long time ago from his curiosity. It’s lucky then that he is an immortal vampire of one of the most influential vampire families in the world. It’s one of the only things that has kept him alive through his years to get him to the point where he is an intelligent, mostly obedient member of society. However, in his own words: "once a rebel, always a rebel."
Marcus wants to learn, wants to experience, and wants to enjoy everything he can in life. Being a healer, he knows how fortunate he is to be able to be alive and he is grateful to his father for it. He has a very healthy fear of death - being a vampire makes him immune to disease but he can still be killed after all. He can be reckless at times with some of his life choices, but he tries to keep himself out of situations that can get him in too far over his head.
It’s hard to separate Marcus’ life from the will of his fathers as he gets older in life. His little stint in New Orleans made it obvious to the young man that being a son of a de Clermont put pressure upon him that would only grow with age. Like all young men, he took journeys to learn more about himself, as well as to watch the nation that he helped fight for freedom for grow into what it is now through his unaging eyes. But in the end, he always comes back to his father like a lost son needing someone to remind him that he wasn’t alone when the life he had taken up needs to fade away so no one would learn his secrets.
He is obedient to his father above all, and because of that his father trusts him and allows him to question his reasons to be able to make sensible decisions. The dedication he has to his father has put him into situations that he knows are risky to his health - protecting Diana’s secrets, taking over as Grand Master of the Knights of Lazarus - but he does them anyway but not without complaint.
He is still a young vampire, and while he has seen a lot in this world, he hasn’t seen nearly as much as the rest of the vampires in his family. Where the rest of them are serious, cautious, and careful with their actions - Marcus tends to have an aloof air, a blasé attitude, and playful nature to his interactions with everyone he meets. It gives him the personality that can be seen almost immature for his age when standing next to the rest of his family. For him, it allows him to keep a foot firmly planted in life and enjoying it. However, it has been shown that the time he's been running the Knights, he has become a bit more serious, and carries a guarded, sad look in his eyes at times.
He is also a horrible romantic and now that he has a mate, he will do anything he can to protect her. He has instincts that will make it hard for him to be separated from her - he will have to overcome a withdrawal period after arriving back into the game because of this.
Why would your character be chosen? Beyond being a physician, Marcus is a caregiver. His father felt that Marcus had a gift for healing. He worries about those who he considers friends and family, and finds way to comfort them either thought medicine, a few gentle words, a hug, or a laugh.
He's also now become a leader of an army, and learned how to command all different types of creatures as well as the delicate workings of democracy and politics. If there is a war coming, he knows how to be a general.
How much does your character know about nonhumans? Marcus is a doctor who is currently studying the genetic makeup and heritage of vampires, witches, and daemons in his own world. He is also a vampire himself. He is a part of an influential family of vampires that have close ties to the Congregation, which monitors the interactions that the three groups have among each other as well as with the humans to keep their existence out of human perception. No other type of creatures exist in their world beyond these four.
Why this character: He is a returning character who with his new canon point is built to be a bit more responsible and authoritative. He may not be the oldest vampire in the game, but he knows most of them at this point and have no problem stepping up to take back his spot in making sure they are provided for, cared for, and if needed, governed. He still possesses his curious nature, and the new setting will work well with him. He also won't shut up since I finished the book and wants to come back "home".
4. Samples
Please either include a first-person entry that could be your character's first post on The Network, or a third-person prose or action spam sample that could be your character's reaction to arriving in Dagaz. For the other two samples, links to previous character examples are fine.
First-Person:
[he was walking through a hallway, admiring the architecture of the ceiling as he had his head tilted up]
Now this is amazing. I want to say Gothic, but I’m pretty sure my father would lecture me that there are bits about it that are off. He was a carpenter, after all. You won’t believe the shit he gave me when I was trying to get into that whole flipping houses thing a couple of years ago.
[he chuckled, then looked back into the little camera and flashed a bright, charming smile]
So I’m new here, and could really use a tour guide since I think I may have unintentionally scared the poor girls that came to meet me. Not my fault, but I don’t think they were expecting a new handsome face to show up at their doorstep today. Anyway, I’m Marcus. Feel free to come find me since... well... it seems I’ve gotten myself lost already.
Third-Person: Learning to Feed
Third Sample:
[he was sitting in the library, a large book open in front of him and a notebook at his side. He was writing down notes, amusement on his face]
And I thought I had read it all. I mean, really, when they got to the whole sparkling thing, I was about to give up on any common sense in the genre. But this... this right here takes the cake.
[he finishes his notes and then picks up the book, leaning his chair back onto two legs as he flips through the pages with a red pen twirling between two fingers]
I’m so tempted to write in the margins and correct some of this, but I’m sure that’s frowned upon.
[he turns away from the camera a moment as two young woman passes him by. He smiles at them and gives a little wave, and the younger instantly blushes, lowers her head and keeps walking while the older one talks rapidly while glaring at him over her shoulder. He sighs to himself. ]
And that kind of reaction is really getting old...
